In the midst of one of the world's longest lockdowns, Melbourne’s Hydra Fashion Week release the isolation-anthem, “SICK (day #132)”.
Lead singer and songwriter, Charlie Teitelbaum’s voice seeps with a
fatigued sincerity over building, melancholy-tinged guitar, they traverse the frustrations of being in lockdown aptly.
Charlie says: “ ‘SICK (day #132)’ is something for all those feeling stuck, to howl along with...though the restrictions are necessary, it’s ok to be frustrated and pissed off. Also, after dealing with a chronic illness most of my adult life, the idea of being “sick”, and trying to get over that feeling each day, connects with me on a personal and political level. Trying to connect the internal with the communal, or something like that."
‘SICK (day #132)’ follows on from previous singles, ‘Delete’ and “jangly punk stomper” (Trouble Juice), ‘First Person Shooter'.
Having been prepared to release their debut album in 2020, the group have taken a detour on those plans, as Charlie explains, “we were forced to pause all our plans, re-adjust and re-assess. Sometimes painfully. So we made a hard pivot,” and that pivot is the rawness of 'SICK (day #132)', recorded alone in Charlie’s garage with a single microphone and guitar. It speaks “to all the feelings people close to me were having coping with the immediate and flow-on effects of the pandemic. And specifically those still in lockdown. Also in this song I acknowledge that maybe things weren’t so good before, and even after something as challenging as this, it feels like we should end up somewhere different.”
